The first horse to the gate
Nobody wants a horse that’s hard to catch. Sunny walks up to you in the pasture looking for a rub, and that temperament is exactly what we wanted in a stallion. He’s my personal riding horse, and I drive him to the cart as well.
He’s built stout, with a straight back and a long, high head carriage. His legs are straight and well-muscled, with strong hooves. If you want a big, smooth-gaited horse with an in-your-pocket personality, a foal by Sunny is a good place to start.
What he produces
We breed for gait, disposition and conformation first. Color is the icing on top. Because Sunny is homozygous for roan, every foal is roan; so far he has thrown red roan, blue roan, blue roan and white, and palomino roan. His foals have consistently carried his looks and gentle disposition.
Bred for the field trial
Sunny’s foals make great field trial horses. A day behind bird dogs means hours in the saddle over rough ground, with dogs running, horses bunched up in the gallery and blank pistols going off. Not every horse can handle that. The ones that can share three traits, and they’re exactly what we breed for:
- Size. At 16 hands, Sunny passes on the height and stout build to carry a rider all day, see over broom sedge and brush, and keep the dogs in sight.
- An all-natural gait. Sunny’s running walk comes naturally, and it’s smooth enough to ride from the first brace to the last without wearing you out, and his foals are born with it.
- A great disposition. A field trial horse has to stand quietly on point, stay calm around gunfire and other horses, and be easy to catch and saddle at daybreak. Sunny is the first horse to the gate, and his foals take after him.
